winter = bad photos??
When the seasons shift and the leaves fall away, it’s easy to assume winter is the worst time for photos. The air is colder, the landscape feels quieter, and somehow the idea forms that winter = dull or lifeless imagery! As a photographer in Houston & San Diego, I've found the opposite to be true...I think winter may be one of the most beautiful seasons to step in front of the camera.
Here are some of my thoughts on this matter:
- There is an automatic soft filter on everything.
- You can shoot at virtually any time of day! This makes for a lot of flexibility and allows more time for shooting.
- Fewer crowds
- Luckily editing does exist, but it can only take you so far. Photographing in the winter allows for a more private experience and a more intimate one.
- Styling looks better in winter
- Layers, texture, and neutral tones photograph beautifully! Bring out the coats, knits & structured pieces. this will add depth without feeling distracting.
- Clients can be more comfortable
- Winter = no sweating...unless you're in Australia. This is a huge game changer for portraits and can allow for hair & makeup to stay longer.
There’s something really refreshing about how quiet it feels..fewer distractions, slower moments, and more space to just be present. When things aren’t competing for attention, the focus naturally shifts back to connection, expression, and the moments that make photos feel real.
